Um novo estudo sugere que o forte impacto que criou a nossa Lua foi na verdade uma sequencia de dois impactos. O autor principal dessa nova teoria se chama Erik Asphaug, professor do Laboratório Lunar e Planetário da Universidade do Arizona (LPL).
Os cientistas acreditam que o nosso satélite natural, a Lua , tenha nascido de um impacto violento, coalescendo do material lançado no espaço depois que um corpo do tamanho de Marte chamado Theia se chocou contra a proto-Terra há mais de 4,4 bilhões de anos.
Mas os autores desse novo estudo identificaram alguns problemas om o cenário de colisão canônica, que invoca um único evento catastrófico.
“O modelo padrão para a lua requer uma colisão muito lenta, relativamente falando, e cria uma lua que é composta principalmente do planeta impactante, não da proto-Terra, o que é um grande problema, pois a lua tem uma química isotópica quase idêntica para a Terra “, disse o autor principal Erik Asphaug, professor do Laboratório Lunar e Planetário da Universidade do Arizona (LPL), em um comunicado .
Impacto duplo
Para este novo estudo os cientistas realizaram simulações de computador do antigo impacto e descobriram o que acreditam ser um ajuste melhor: Theia e a proto-Terra caíram em velocidades mais rápidas do que anteriormente previsto, produzindo uma colisão inicial de “bater e correr” que preparou o terreno para um encontro mais lento e cumulativo entre os dois corpos despedaçados, a cerca de 100.000 a 1 milhão de anos depois.

De acordo com uma nova teoria, houve dois impactos gigantes consecutivos, separados por 100.000 a 1 milhão de anos, envolvendo um corpo do tamanho de Marte chamado Theia e a proto-Terra.

“O impacto duplo mistura as coisas muito mais do que um único evento, o que poderia explicar a semelhança isotópica entre a Terra e a lua, e também como a segunda colisão lenta teria acontecido em primeiro lugar”, disse Asphaug
As colisões atropeladas não se restringiam ao nascente sistema Terra-lua naqueles primeiros dias. Na verdade, esses choques repentinos eram provavelmente tão comuns quanto as fusões de acréscimo no antigo sistema solar interno, relatou a mesma equipe de pesquisa em um segundo novo estudo.
A Terra como escudo para Vênus
No segundo artigo, os cientistas modelaram impactos gigantes no sistema solar interno, como essas colisões afetaram a formação do planeta e como as órbitas dos objetos envolvidos evoluíram ao longo do tempo. Eles descobriram que a Terra provavelmente agiu como uma espécie de escudo para Vênus, recebendo o impacto dos primeiros impactos. Essas colisões iniciais desaceleraram os impactadores, preparando o terreno para fusões cumulativas com Vênus mais tarde.
“A ideia predominante é que realmente não importa se os planetas colidem e não se fundem imediatamente, porque eles vão se encontrar novamente em algum ponto e então se fundir”, Alexandre Emsenhuber, o principal autor do segundo estudo, disse no mesmo comunicado.
“Mas não é isso que encontramos”, disse Emsenhuber, que realizou a pesquisa durante uma bolsa de pós-doutorado no laboratório de Asphaug na LPL e agora está na Ludwig Maximilian University em Munique, Alemanha. “Descobrimos que eles acabam se tornando parte de Vênus com mais frequência, em vez de retornar à Terra. É mais fácil ir da Terra a Vênus do que o contrário.” (Isso ocorre porque Vênus fica mais perto do sol, cuja poderosa gravidade atrai os objetos.)
Os resultados sugerem que as composições da Terra e de Vênus podem diferir mais do que os cientistas pensavam.
“Você poderia pensar que a Terra é composta mais de material do sistema externo porque está mais próxima do sistema solar externo do que Vênus”, disse Asphaug. “Mas, na verdade, com a Terra neste papel de vanguarda, torna-se mais provável que Vênus agregue material externo do sistema solar.”
Os dois novos estudos – o liderado por Asphaug e o liderado por Emsenhuber – foram publicados online na quinta-feira (24 de setembro) no The Planetary Science Journal.
